As the strident impact on our climate grows, priority should be given to lessen our impact in every way. Here are 5 simple & easy rules to apply to your travel routine that will make a significant difference!

Tip #1 : While packing your clothes and toiletries, include reusable grocery bags. I travel with about 2 or 3 medium sized reusable (canvas) bags everywhere I go (even locally). It may not seem like much BUT those plastic bags from the grocery store you get from every trip? You just end up throwing them away when you get home, thus increasing your amount of waste.

Tip #2 : This one is probably obvious, BUT to reiterate, travel with your own plastic or aluminum water bottle. Refill it as you go and don’t purchase plastic water bottles in your arrival destination.

Tip #3 : Traveling with your own set of utensils (bamboo, metal, etc.) significantly reduces the amount of those flimsy plastic utensils you get with to-go food ending up in a landfill.

Tip #4 : Walk, bike, or use public transport to your destination – Hopefully a no brainer! Less fuel used = less carbon emissions produced and great exercise 🙂

Tip #5: Do less laundry – have a stain on your shirt? A clorox pen can probably get it out. No need to do a full load of laundry after wearing pieces one time. If one item really needs a wash, use the sink! I can’t count how many times I’ve washed socks and underwear in the sink!

Hope you put these 5 simple tips for more eco-friendly travel into practice!

Happy travels!

Just an American who moved to Madrid, Spain and didn't look back. Searching for sunshine and tapas along the way :)
